Zakia Kulabako, a passionate promoter of rugby in Uganda, is leveraging her participation in the Capgemini Women in Rugby Leadership Programme to grow the sport. Her collaborative efforts with the Uganda Rugby Union aim to integrate rugby into schools, aspiring for it to become the national sport. Kulabako’s administrative talents and newfound skills from Capgemini University support her ambitions to enhance rugby’s presence in her country.
Zakia Kulabako is dedicated to promoting rugby in Uganda, supported by her participation in the Capgemini Women in Rugby Leadership Programme. Despite her initial lack of playing experience since joining KOBs as a team manager in 2008, Kulabako’s passion for the sport has driven her to foster its growth in her country.
As a member of the Uganda Rugby Union, she advocates for rugby’s integration in schools, envisioning its rise to national sport status. Kulabako expressed her desire for rugby to be as culturally significant in Uganda as it is in New Zealand, stating, “I would love it to be like New Zealand where shops close when there’s a rugby game.”
Kulabako’s selection for the Capgemini programme came after two previous applications. Receiving this opportunity in early 2023 filled her with immense pride, especially considering the high number of applicants. “It was something that I really, really value and I’m really proud and was so excited for,” she remarked.
With guidance from scholarship alumni Regina Lunyolo, Kulabako has transitioned from a team manager to a key player in commercial sponsorship within rugby. Her background in events management aligns with her ambitions in the sport, where skills gained from Capgemini University courses have impacted her professional life positively.
She aspires to significantly elevate the sport in Uganda, including launching a women’s franchise competition. Collaborating with alumni has enabled her to refine her objectives, citing the influence of seasoned professionals from other countries. This has led to the implementation of innovative initiatives like a recent 10s tournament.
Kulabako’s vision encompasses year-round rugby play, supporting population growth within the sport. She remains optimistic about the impact of shared ideas and collaborative work among her programme peers. The inspiration she garnered from attending the Capgemini Women in Rugby Leadership Summit in Paris further fueled her commitment to the sport.
Her affection for rugby extends beyond gameplay; she cherishes the community it fosters. “You’re literally enemies in those 80 minutes but… there’s a brotherhood that shows up,” she reflected. This sense of unity and support among players remains a powerful draw for her and underscores her devotion to the sport’s collective spirit.
