Gongloe Advocates for Inclusive Investigation into Mysterious Deaths

Counselor Tiawan Gongloe urges an inclusive investigation into mysterious deaths in Liberia, calling for examinations extending beyond the current administration and addressing past cases. President Boakai has initiated an inquiry into unresolved deaths, emphasizing the necessity for justice and transparency. Gongloe highlights prominent cases, advocating for thorough scrutiny and clarity regarding these incidents.

Counselor Tiawan Gongloe, a noted opposition figure, recently addressed President Joseph Boakai’s directive for a comprehensive investigation into the mysterious deaths of notable individuals over the past decade. During a Cabinet meeting, President Boakai underscored the urgency of resolving these cases, emphasizing that no incident will be overlooked in the pursuit of justice and closure for the affected families.

President Boakai articulated the significance of the investigation, stating, “The Liberian people deserve answers,” and tasked law enforcement agencies with expediting inquiries, collaborating internationally, and providing the public with regular updates on progress. While Counselor Gongloe commended the initiation of this inquiry, he underscored the need for inclusivity, advocating for the investigation to extend beyond the current administration’s tenure.

In a press conference in Monrovia, Gongloe expressed that previous unresolved cases, particularly those occurring during the administration of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, must also be examined. He cautioned that limiting the investigation to recent incidents might be perceived as politically motivated, potentially undermining the credibility of President Boakai’s efforts.

Gongloe pointed to various high-profile cases, such as the deaths of Princes Cooper, Counselor Michael Allison, and Harry Greaves, which deserve thorough examination. He asserted that a thorough inquiry into these cases would provide the needed transparency and assistance in addressing the anxieties and concerns within the Liberian community.

Specifically, Gongloe recalled the mysterious death of Princes Cooper, an instance in which he previously served as legal counsel. He advocated for the inclusion of deaths occurring during the Johnson-Sirleaf administration, stating, “I strongly believe that Boakai should amend his instruction to include those mysterious deaths that happened under the Johnson-Sirleaf administration.”

The article also highlights significant unexplained deaths during the Sirleaf Administration. In 2015, lawyer and whistleblower Counselor Michael Allison was found dead on a Monrovia beach; his death raised suspicions of foul play, as he had previously reported concerns for his safety.

Additionally, in January 2016, the remains of Harry Greaves, former managing director of the Liberia Petroleum Refinery Company, were uncovered near Monrovia. Despite a determination of drowning by a U.S.-based pathologist, public demand for clarification regarding his death persists. Former Information Minister Lenn Eugene Nagbe indicated the government’s request for U.S. assistance in the investigation, revealing the administration’s commitment to gaining clarity about Greaves’ demise.

Counselor Tiawan Gongloe has called for an inclusive investigation into the mysterious deaths of prominent figures in Liberia, emphasizing the importance of addressing unresolved cases from previous administrations. While supporting President Boakai’s current efforts, Gongloe believes it is crucial to examine incidents beyond the current administration to uphold the credibility of the investigation. Cases such as those involving Princes Cooper, Michael Allison, and Harry Greaves exemplify the need for transparency and justice in a matter of national concern.
