On Tuesday, diplomats from the Quintet Committee met with Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, who conveyed to the U.S. and French representatives Lebanon’s concerns. Berri highlighted that Lebanon is facing unjust repercussions despite its adherence to the ceasefire agreement, while Israel maintains an occupation of southern territories and conducts military operations against both civilian and military targets.
Additionally, the issue of Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon was at the forefront during discussions between President Joseph Aoun and U.S. Major General Jasper Jeffers, who oversees Resolution 1701’s implementation. President Aoun urged for intensified international pressure on Israel regarding the withdrawal and the release of Lebanese detainees.
In light of these discussions, U.S. Deputy Special Envoy for the Middle East, Morgan Ortagus, affirmed that the U.S. would facilitate negotiations between Lebanon and Israel. These talks will aim to address unresolved issues, including the release of detainees, disputes along the Blue Line, and the locations where Israeli forces remain stationed.
