Home Minister Amit Shah also congratulated PM Modi, noting that this recognition marks his 21st international award. Shah stated that it illustrates Modi’s global statesmanship, which aligns with the ancient Indian mantra of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” a message resonating with unity and familial relations among nations.
The announcement of this prestigious honor came from the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, making Modi the first Indian to receive this distinction. Ramgoolam highlighted that only five foreign dignitaries have received this title since Mauritius became a Republic, including the notable Nelson Mandela.
During the event attended by PM Modi and PM Ramgoolam, the national anthems of both nations were performed. Modi, who was the Chief Guest for Mauritius National Day, underscored India’s strong diplomatic and cultural ties with Mauritius, as noted by the Ministry of External Affairs.
While visiting Mauritius, PM Modi gifted OCI Cards to the President and First Lady, along with a selection of culturally significant items such as holy Sangam water and a traditional Banarasi saree. Furthermore, he toured the Ayurveda garden at State House, developed in collaboration with India.
