Petrobras has announced a successful drill stem test at the Sirius-2 well off Colombia’s coast, confirming significant gas productivity and marking the largest gas discovery in the country’s history, potentially increasing reserves by 200%. The consortium will continue assessment of the findings while expanding strategic oil supply agreements.
Petrobras has successfully conducted a drill stem test (DST) at the Sirius-2 well, which is located approximately 31 kilometers off the Colombian coast at a depth of 804 meters. The testing confirmed strong productivity over a 100-meter reservoir interval. The Sirius-2 well is part of the GUA-OFF-0 offshore block, situated 77 kilometers from Santa Marta, the capital city of Colombia’s Magdalena department.
During the DST, samples were gathered for laboratory analysis, and initial evaluations suggest a substantial presence of gas in the vicinity. Petrobras operates in Colombia through its subsidiary, Petrobras International Braspetro – Sucursal Colombia, holding a 44.44% interest in the consortium, while Ecopetrol retains the remaining 55.56% stake.
In December 2024, Petrobras and Ecopetrol reported the significant gas discovery associated with the Sirius-2 well, which has confirmed volumes exceeding six trillion cubic feet. This discovery is noted as the largest in Colombia’s history, potentially augmenting the country’s gas reserves by a remarkable 200%.
Originally named Uchuva-2, the Sirius-2 well is the second well drilled in this region, following the earlier Sirius-1 (previously known as Uchuva-1). The consortium plans to continue examining the drilling results of both Sirius-1 and Sirius-2 in accordance with its established plan and contractual obligations to Colombia’s Agencia Nacional de Hidrocarburos.
Furthermore, in February 2025, Petrobras entered into a strategic term contract with Bharat Petroleum Corporation for the supply of Brazilian crude oil grades. The company also formed cooperative agreements with ONGC Videsh and Oil India to explore further oil and gas opportunities.
Petrobras’ recent DST at the Sirius-2 well highlights an important gas discovery off the Colombian coast, with potential to significantly enhance national reserves. The consortium, comprised of Petrobras and Ecopetrol, is committed to further assessments and ongoing exploration efforts, indicating strong future prospects for Colombia’s energy sector.
