The company’s site in Kunzila, located in the North Achefer district, was closed resulting in over 1,000 job losses, highlighting the severe impact of the conflict on local employment.
The official statement from Selecta One outlined that the challenges faced in the past two years could not be resolved under the current circumstances. The company emphasized that, despite its dedication, the safety of its employees could not be assured, necessitating this decision.
Ansgar Klemm, the CEO of Selecta One, expressed his regret about the closure, referencing the extensive development efforts made in the region. He noted the hope for a brighter future following the end of civil war in November 2022, but unfortunately, the prevailing political challenges proved overwhelming.
Klemm remarked that the relocation would not only result in job losses but also affect the livelihoods of approximately 10,000 individuals in the community. Amidst the conflict, over 3,000 jobs were lost in the Amhara region, with industries suffering damages amounting to an estimated 2.5 billion birr.
The West Gojjam Zone has experienced escalating violence, including a significant clash in October 2024 that involved heavy weaponry, and a recent altercation in Jimat Enkokma Kebele that tragically claimed lives. Reports indicate that such conflicts not only destabilize communities but also damage crops, compounding the challenges faced by local farmers.
