Timor-Leste Establishes Parliamentary Commission for Western Sahara Support

Timor-Leste’s National Parliament has approved a resolution to establish a Parliamentary Commission to support the Saharawi people’s cause for self-determination. This commission will comprise members from various political parties. Ambassador Malainin Abba praised this initiative as a sign of solidarity. Previously, the Parliament participated in an international conference on Saharawi solidarity.

On March 10, 2025, the National Parliament of Timor-Leste approved a resolution to create a Parliamentary Commission focused on the Western Sahara issue. This initiative underscores Timor-Leste’s solidarity with the Saharawi cause and aims to provide support for the Saharawi people’s quest for self-determination.

The newly formed Parliamentary Commission comprises representatives from all political factions within Timor-Leste’s Parliament. Specifically, it includes three members from the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction Party (CNRT), two from the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN), one from the Democratic Party (PD), one from the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), and one from KUNTO Party.

Mr. Malainin Abba, the Saharawi Republic’s Ambassador, emphasized the significance of this resolution, stating that it reflects a strong commitment from the Parliament and the Timorese populace to support the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination, independence, and sovereignty.

Additionally, it is noteworthy that the previous Commission for Western Sahara in Timor-Leste participated in the 46th European Conference of Support and Solidarity with Saharawi People (EUCOCO) held in Berlin, Germany in December 2022. This illustrates the ongoing engagement of Timor-Leste in international discussions regarding the Saharawi situation.

In conclusion, the establishment of a Parliamentary Commission by Timor-Leste’s National Parliament marks a significant step in supporting the Saharawi people’s struggle for self-determination. This initiative reflects the commitment of various political parties in Timor-Leste to stand in solidarity with the Saharawi cause, as highlighted by Ambassador Malainin Abba. Furthermore, continued international participation emphasizes the ongoing importance of the issue.
