An Argentine court initiated the trial on Tuesday involving seven healthcare professionals accused of negligence leading to the death of soccer legend Diego Maradona at the age of 60. Maradona experienced a cardiac arrest in a residence located near Buenos Aires on November 25, 2020, while under the care of these professionals.
The trial is presided over by three judges, who will determine the culpability of the accused, which includes a neurosurgeon, a psychiatrist, and various medical personnel. If convicted, the maximum penalty they face could reach up to 25 years in prison.
Among those in attendance in the courtroom were the grieving family of Maradona, including his eldest daughters, Dalma and Giannina, as well as his former partner, Verónica Ojeda, and another daughter, Jana. Just prior to the trial’s commencement, Ojeda posted a video on social media showcasing Maradona’s son, Diego Fernando, donning a T-shirt printed with the late soccer star’s face alongside the word “justice.”
Notably, neurosurgeon Leonardo Luque, Maradona’s personal physician in the final four years of his life, stands at the center of the allegations. Just weeks before Maradona’s passing, Dr. Luque performed surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain.
The remaining six healthcare professionals implicated include psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, responsible for prescribing Maradona’s medication up until his death; psychologist Carlos Díaz; Nancy Forlini, who coordinated the medical company overseeing Maradona’s care; and doctor Pedro Di Spagna, who managed his treatment. Additionally, nurse Ricardo Almirón is among the indicted.
Nurse Gisela Madrid, also facing charges, is scheduled to be tried by a jury later this year.
