U.S. and Ukraine to Release Joint Statement Following Talks in Jeddah

The U.S. and Ukraine are preparing to release a joint statement regarding recent talks in Jeddah, focusing on ceasefire negotiations and military aid. Key representatives from both nations participated, discussing potential terms for a ceasefire and the implications of a minerals deal that recently collapsed.

On March 11, 2023, the United States and Ukraine are set to issue a joint statement from their talks that took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. According to the Financial Times (FT), these discussions focused on a potential ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Russia, restoring U.S. military assistance, and intelligence sharing.

Key issues addressed during the talks included a failed minerals deal that collapsed on February 28, following intense discussions among President Volodymyr Zelensky, U.S. President Donald Trump, and U.S. Vice President JD Vance. Notably, the two-day negotiations have not been scheduled to continue further, as reported by FT.

Ukrainian representatives are proposing a ceasefire that addresses aerial and maritime domains, along with restrictions on long-range strikes. An official noted that such a ceasefire could be “easy to install and to monitor.” The Ukrainian delegation consisted of Presidential Office head Andriy Yermak, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and Deputy Chief of Staff Pavlo Palisa.

On the U.S. side, the delegation was led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. Following the discussions, Ukraine indicated its willingness to agree to a 30-day ceasefire if Russia complied. This information was shared by the Presidential Office after the meeting in Saudi Arabia.

The discussions between the U.S. and Ukraine in Jeddah aimed to explore potential pathways for a ceasefire and restore military assistance. Both nations recognize the need for systematic approaches to de-escalate the conflict. As the situation develops, the proposals offered could lead to significant adjustments in the ongoing geopolitical climate.
