On Wednesday, Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn issued a strong warning regarding individuals who may be appointed by Venezuela to govern the Essequibo region. He noted that authorities are vigilant of Venezuelan ‘sleepers’ or secret agents within Guyana, emphasizing that anyone supporting these appointments would face treason charges.
During a Police conference, Benn indicated that both Guyanese nationals and foreign individuals appointed following Venezuela’s upcoming elections would be subjected to legal repercussions. “If it’s a Guyanese who is appointed to be Governor of Essequibo and placed at Anna Regina – we will charge that person for treason and lock them up; each and every one of them,” he stated.
Benn reiterated that individuals aiding or supporting the appointments would likewise face treason charges. This statement comes in the context of Guyana’s formal request for provisional measures at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) following Venezuela’s plan to conduct elections on May 25, coinciding with Guyana’s independence celebrations.
