India and Mauritius have upgraded their relations to an ‘enhanced strategic partnership’ by signing eight agreements focused on various sectors, including trade and maritime security. After discussions with Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, PM Modi introduced the ‘MAHASAGAR’ initiative, aimed at ensuring security and growth across regions, particularly in light of increasing Chinese influence in the Indian Ocean. He affirmed that the stability of the Indian Ocean is a shared priority for both nations and highlighted the significance of defense cooperation in their strategic partnership.
PM Modi stated, “We are committed to extend full cooperation in the security of Mauritius’ Exclusive Economic Zone,” reflecting India’s support for Mauritian sovereignty. This commitment aligns with India’s past efforts to assist Mauritius in negotiating with the UK regarding the Chagos Islands. Recently, the UK announced plans to transfer sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius, leading to renewed talks initiated by Mauritius’ new government.

He mentioned various sectors where collaboration has developed, including defense, education, health, and space. Furthermore, he announced significant development projects to be funded by India, such as modernizing water supply infrastructure and launching new community development initiatives.
Additionally, agreements for trade in local currencies were reached, alongside the establishment of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation, to foster governance and innovation.
