Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi is a potential representative for Malaysia at the 2025 Universiade in Germany, pending performance evaluations and scheduling considerations. The Malaysian contingent plans to shortlist 60 athletes for several events, focusing on competitive viability and financial constraints, as they prepare for this elite tournament.
National sprinter Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi is being considered as a leading candidate to represent Malaysia at the 2025 Rhine-Ruhr World University Games (Universiade) in Germany. Contingent head, Datuk Assoc Prof Ts Dr Mohd Hafiz Yusoff, indicated that final selections will be made after discussions with the National Sports Council (MSN) to ensure there are no scheduling conflicts with other competitions and to review Azeem’s current performance and physical fitness.
“Muhammad Azeem is indeed one of the candidates on the list but we need to verify and review with MSN to avoid any schedule overlap,” said Dr. Mohd Hafiz. He expressed optimism that if Azeem maintains good performance and remains injury-free, the team would aim to make a strong showing at the Universiade.
An athlete selection workshop will be conducted to shortlist 60 athletes across seven sports out of a total of 19 events featured at the Universiade. Malaysia will compete in archery, athletics, badminton, diving, artistic gymnastics, swimming, and taekwondo.
Dr. Mohd Hafiz noted that the contingent’s goals and achievements will be determined later, as the selection process involves evaluating athletes based on their current performance. He emphasized the need for prudent financial planning since participating in the event incurs significant costs, and efforts will be made to select competitors who show the potential for success.
The Universiade is scheduled from July 16 to 27, with Malaysia expected to endure strong competition from other elite-level participants, making careful athlete selection vital for success.
In summary, Muhammad Azeem is a prominent prospect for Malaysia’s 2025 Universiade team, pending final selection pending performance assessments. The Malaysian contingent will focus on efficient participation in competitive events, validating athlete performance, and ensuring there are no scheduling conflicts with other tournaments. As Malaysia prepares for this prestigious event, emphasis remains on selecting athletes who can feasibly excel.
