Failure to adhere to this directive will result in enforcement actions pursuant to the Nigerian Communications Act and the National Information Technology Development Act.
In his presentation, Tafoki articulated that Nigeria is predominantly religious, with all major religions condemning nudity and obscenity. He highlighted that many nations in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have already implemented similar restrictions, indicating a worldwide trend.
Moreover, Tafoki cited significant concerns voiced by psychologists and sociologists regarding the potential detrimental effects of adult content. These effects include addiction, desensitization, and alterations in personal and family values, as well as links to moral issues such as adultery and promiscuity.
The House’s resolution, which passed through a voice vote, has tasked its Committees on Communications and Legislative Compliance with the responsibility of monitoring the implementation of this measure, with a report due in four weeks. Additionally, Speaker Tajudeen Abass reiterated that ISPs that do not comply with these directives would face sanctions.
