Eight Machar allies have been released from detention amid rising tensions in South Sudan, with calls for the release of remaining detainees including Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol. Advocacy for adherence to human rights and the rule of law has emerged in response to escalating political tensions between Kiir and Machar’s forces.
The recent release of eight individuals who were detained alongside Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol has been confirmed by Puok Both Baluang, the Press Secretary of First Vice-President Riek Machar. The detainees were arrested amid rising tensions in Nasir, Upper Nile State, with Baluang reporting that eight out of the original 21 detainees have been freed, including relatives of the Minister.
The released individuals include Nelson Malou Lueng Makeny, Kun Tut Gatluak, Peter Magong Degay, Koang Puok Thoat, and Biluny Puok Thoat. Others released are Buay Thichuong Buoy, Yien Dak Kuach, and Bidit Hoth Guandong. Nonetheless, Baluang noted that both Minister Puot Kang Chol and Gen. Duop Lam, Chief of General Staff of the SPLA-IO, remain in custody. The SPLM-IO has reiterated its call for their release along with other detained members.
Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, expressed approval of the eight individuals’ release but urged for the liberation of the remaining detainees. He stressed the significance of adhering to the rule of law and ensuring respect for human rights, especially during politically charged times among the 2018 peace agreement parties.
Yakani further stated, “The leadership of the parties to the peace agreement should refrain from resolving their political differences through violence.” He criticized recent events, citing them as evidence of political immaturity and indiscipline that could threaten the stability of the peace agreement. He asserted that the Presidency must address political tensions proactively.
Tensions have been escalating lately between President Salva Kiir’s forces and those loyal to First Vice President Riek Machar, leader of the SPLM/A-IO. The clashes in Upper Nile State between the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces and the White Army have led to increased governmental efforts to suppress Machar’s allies, with several high-ranking military officials and the Petroleum Minister remaining detained.
