The European Union is set to host its 9th international conference in support of Syria on March 17 in Brussels. This event takes place at a pivotal moment following the fall of the Assad regime, providing an opportunity for the Syrian populace to reclaim their future and rebuild their nation. High Representative and Vice-President Kaja Kallas, alongside Commissioners Dubravka Šuica and Hadja Lahbib, will co-chair the ministerial event themed ‘Standing with Syria: meeting the needs for a successful transition.’
The conference aims to garner international support for a Syrian-driven, inclusive transition, focusing on assistance and socio-economic recovery. For the first time, Syrian interim authorities will attend, alongside representatives from the United Nations, neighboring states, and other regional partners. The gathering underscores the fragility of the current situation in Syria, illustrated by recent violence against civilians and attacks on security forces, and will discuss developments in the country and the immediate needs of the Syrian people.
The EU will additionally emphasize continued support for Syrian citizens and host communities in neighboring countries during this transitional period. Moreover, plans are underway for a separate meeting of Syrian civil society members from within Syria and the diaspora in Damascus at a later date, details of which will be released soon.
Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness, and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib stated: “The EU stands with the Syrian people on their path to recovery, peace, and a secure future. The dire humanitarian crisis in Syria and the region has not vanished with the fall of the regime… The EU will continue its strong support for an inclusive Syrian transition.”
The EU has consistently demonstrated its commitment to aiding the Syrian population, organizing the annual Brussels Conference for eight years and mobilizing over €37 billion in humanitarian, development, economic, and stabilization assistance since 2011, benefiting Syrians both within the country and throughout the region.
The upcoming 9th international conference in support of Syria represents a crucial moment for the Syrian people as they seek to rebuild and reclaim their future. With the EU’s ongoing commitment and substantial support, the event aims to facilitate a successful and inclusive transition while addressing critical humanitarian needs. Continued regional collaboration and support for Syrian civil society will be essential in fostering recovery and stability going forward.
