UNITEL and Ericsson have launched a comprehensive network modernization initiative in Angola, focusing on Enhanced Mobile Broadband and Fixed Wireless Access. The upgrades involve a dual-mode 5G Core that supports both 4G and 5G technology, enabling customized services and enhanced communication. As a result, various services will improve economic connectivity while fostering innovation in the digital economy.
UNITEL, in alliance with Ericsson, has inaugurated a comprehensive network modernization project aimed at improving connectivity throughout Angola. This upgrade is set to introduce Enhanced Mobile Broadband and Fixed Wireless Access services, vital for fostering economic development and supporting applications requiring high-speed, low-latency capabilities.
Ericsson has enhanced the core network of UNITEL S.A. with its innovative dual-mode 5G Core, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), and Cloud Native Infrastructure solutions. This advanced framework allows for the seamless amalgamation of both 4G and 5G technologies on one platform, enabling UNITEL to tailor services through network slicing and edge capabilities as well as to enhance voice and data services via a 5G standalone (5G SA) network.
The dual-mode 5G Core merges Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and 5G Core, leveraging cloud-native and microservice-based technology. This synergy facilitates a smoother transition for legacy 2G and 3G voice services to advance to 4G and 5G networks. In addition, UNITEL can now deliver real-time communication services across all access networks thanks to Ericsson’s IMS.
Recently, Ericsson and UNITEL completed a trial data call on a live 5G Standalone network, highlighting the extensive potential of 5G technology. This accomplishment marks a significant milestone in UNITEL’s endeavor to offer next-generation 5G services, featuring network slicing and cutting-edge innovations.
Júlio Gonçalves, Director of Core and Services at UNITEL, stated, “Our partnership with Ericsson marks a transformative moment for Angola’s telecommunications sector. It enables us to provide our customers with a world-class network that will drive socio-economic growth and advancement across the country. With Ericsson’s cutting-edge solutions, we are confident in delivering an exceptional customer experience.”
The strategic enhancement of UNITEL’s network will support an array of services including Voice over LTE (VoLTE), Wi-Fi Calling, 5G Voice, Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), and applications requiring high-speed, low-latency connectivity. This technological advancement is poised to significantly enhance connectivity and stimulate economic progress in Angola.
Majda Lahlou Kassi, Vice President and Head of Ericsson West & Southern Africa, remarked, “We are dedicated to enabling a fully connected Angola through 5G technology, driving innovation, and accelerating the digital economy. Our advanced solutions will help UNITEL meet the growing demand for smart devices and data usage, bringing innovative technologies that open up new opportunities for businesses and individuals alike.”
With a longstanding collaboration exceeding 20 years, UNITEL and Ericsson have partnered on Core Network, Radio Access Network, and Billing solutions. This latest modernization initiative seeks to maximize automation benefits while enhancing the overall 5G customer experience, providing reliable, secure, and high-quality communication solutions.
The collaborative efforts of UNITEL and Ericsson in modernizing the network in Angola promise to significantly enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth. By implementing advanced 5G technologies, they aim to provide a broad range of services essential for the digital economy. This strategic upgrade positions Angola at the forefront of telecommunications innovation, paving the way for socio-economic advancement.
