The agreement entails collaboration with Jordan and the United Nations Development Programme. Qatar’s initiative is set to enhance power generation at the Deir Ali power plant, with plans to gradually ramp up output, thereby addressing the pressing energy needs across various cities.
Electricity generated will be allocated to numerous Syrian cities, including Damascus, Rif Dimashq, and Aleppo, among others. Fahad Hamad Hassan Al-Sulaiti, head of the Qatar Fund for Development, emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating it represents a crucial step toward fulfilling the Syrian people’s energy requirements.
Since the removal of former President Bashar al-Assad in December, Syria’s interim authorities have faced challenges in supplying adequate electricity to civilians. The country’s infrastructure has suffered severe damage due to over 13 years of civil conflict, exacerbating the current energy crisis. Previously, much of Syria’s oil for energy production relied on imports from Iran, which have now ceased.
