Renowned Dhol Badak Bimal Mali Passes Away at 79 in Dhubri District

Bimal Mali, a 79-year-old renowned drummer from Dhubri district, passed away, leaving a significant impact on the local music community, particularly through his work with Padmashree Pratima Barua Pandey. He had been ill for several days prior to his death and was actively involved in teaching dhol players. Mali received multiple awards for his musical contributions.

Bimal Mali, a respected Dhol badak or drummer, passed away at his home in Gauripur town, Dhubri district, at the age of 79. His death has created a profound sense of loss across the region, particularly as he was a significant figure in the music community, especially known for his collaboration with the legendary Goalpariya lokageet singer, Padmashree Pratima Barua Pandey.

For several days prior to his passing, family sources indicated that Mali had been experiencing various health issues and was undergoing treatment. His professional relationship with Pandey began in 1977, and he lent his drumming talents to over 500 songs on both radio and television, including the famous track “Sonar Baran Pakhi”.

After the passing of Pandey, Mali dedicated himself to nurturing future musical talent by coaching dhol players from his home. Over the years, he was honored with several awards for his contributions to the music field, such as the Purani Dinor Hawarani Bota in 2003, the Pratima Barua Pandey Bota in 2009, and the Bhupen Hazarika Lok Shilpi Sanman in 2011, among others.
