Turo Darboe, through the Vision Development Foundation (VDF), recently donated 3,689 bags of sugar as part of an initiative aimed at alleviating poverty and empowering communities. This act not only provides immediate assistance but also demonstrates the organization’s commitment to long-term corporate social responsibility.
On Tuesday, Mr. Darboe distributed nearly 4,000 bags of 10KG sugar to various entities including political parties, organizations, Village Development Committees, National Assembly Members, and NGOs. The National People’s Party (NPP) and the United Democratic Party (UDP) each received 300 bags, while other political parties received 200 or 150 bags each.
Additionally, 200 bags were given to the Christian Council, 171 to the National Assembly, and 100 to individuals with disabilities. Despite being away on health grounds for the past six months, all contributions reflect Mr. Darboe’s longstanding tradition of supporting vulnerable populations, especially during the holy months of Ramadan and Tobaski.
Saihou Fofana, the Public Relations Officer of VDF, praised Mr. Darboe’s humanitarian efforts. He emphasized that this distribution aims to reach communities effectively throughout the month, noting, “We believe that these people would more easily access the sugar through their political party.”
Karafa Sonko, a representative of the UDP, expressed gratitude towards VDF for aiding the Muslim community during Ramadan, highlighting that the cooperation among different political parties signifies unity among Gambians. Meanwhile, Lamin Saho from the NPP acknowledged VDF’s generosity and assured that the sugar would be allocated to underprivileged areas in and around Kanifing Municipality.
Honorable Samba Jallow, representing the National Reconciliation Party, valued the initiative that brought together multiple political factions, reflecting unity and support across the political spectrum. Ismaila Jallow, a councilor for Suba Ward, reiterated the importance of such donations, saying they would significantly benefit vulnerable individuals, especially amidst ongoing community needs for essential supplies like sugar, rice, and oil.
In conclusion, Turo Darboe’s generous donation of 3,689 bags of sugar, facilitated through the Vision Development Foundation, underscores the importance of community support and the role of political inclusivity in addressing poverty. The collaborative effort among various political parties demonstrates a commitment to unifying resources for the welfare of underprivileged populations, especially during significant religious periods.
