Tropical Cyclone Jude made landfall in Mozambique on 10 March 2025, risking 780,000 lives, particularly in Nampula and Zambezia. Early interventions have been initiated, but the humanitarian response is hindered by previous disasters and funding shortages. Flooding and cholera outbreaks are also emerging as significant concerns in the aftermath of the cyclone.
As of 10 March 2025, Tropical Cyclone Jude has made landfall in the Mossuril district of Nampula province, with maximum sustained winds reaching 140 km/h and gusts up to 195 km/h. An estimated 780,000 individuals are at risk of severe impacts due to high winds and heavy rainfall across Nampula and Zambezia provinces, as per the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management (INGD). The Hydrological Department has also issued flooding alerts for major rivers in Nampula.
In anticipation of Cyclone Jude, the Mozambique Anticipatory Action Framework for Cyclones has been activated, and funds from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) were swiftly allocated to humanitarian partners. However, the humanitarian response capacities are strained due to concurrent emergencies, including the aftermath of Cyclones Chido and Dikeledi and challenges posed by cholera, food insecurity, and political tensions. Currently, the Tropical Cyclones Flash Appeal is severely underfunded at 0.2 percent.
Tropical Cyclone Jude poses a significant threat to Mozambique, primarily affecting Nampula and Zambezia provinces. With prior cyclones having already strained resources and ongoing health crises like cholera, the humanitarian response must address immediate needs while also preparing for potential long-term impacts. Coordinated efforts and adequate funding are crucial in managing the crisis effectively and aiding the affected populations.
