US Ambassador Nicole Theriot reaffirmed strong US support for Guyana amid Venezuelan incursions, emphasizing commitment to protect its territorial integrity. Venezuela’s upcoming elections for the contested Essequibo region have raised tensions, prompting Guyana to seek ICJ intervention and warnings against local support for Venezuela.
On Thursday, US Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, reiterated the United States government’s unwavering support for Guyana amid recent Venezuelan naval incursions and ongoing aggression towards the Essequibo region. “We support Guyana 100 per cent against this aggression; it is unacceptable and we won’t allow Venezuela to threaten Guyana’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, and so we are standing with many other international partners,” Ambassador Theriot asserted.
Furthermore, she emphasized, “We will always stand shoulder to shoulder with Guyana in supporting you and defending you.” This declaration follows an incursion dated March 1, 2025, which has prompted substantial condemnation from both regional and international partners of Guyana. In light of the rising tensions, Guyana has sought provisional measures at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) following Venezuela’s announcement of elections scheduled for May 25, just before Guyana’s 59th Independence Day celebrations.
The elections are intended to appoint officials for the Essequibo region and are perceived as a significant provocation against Guyana’s rightful territorial claims. Robeson Benn, the Minister of Home Affairs, reported on Wednesday that authorities have identified Venezuelan agents operating secretly in Guyana, warning that those supporting Venezuela’s claimed election will face treason charges.
In summary, the United States firmly supports Guyana in response to Venezuelan aggression, with Ambassador Nicole Theriot affirming this commitment. Guyana’s appeal to the International Court underscores the gravity of the situation as Venezuela conducts provocative elections for the contested Essequibo region. Authorities have also indicated a vigilance against any internal collaboration with Venezuela, highlighting the seriousness of the territorial integrity issue.
