Ben Magara Appointed CEO of Exxaro Resources Limited Effective April 2025

Bennetor (Ben) Magara has been appointed as CEO of Exxaro Resources Limited, effective 1 April 2025. He succeeds acting CEO Riaan Koppeschaar, who remains finance director. Magara aims to expand the company’s portfolio towards low-carbon minerals while maintaining profitability and sustainability.

Exxaro Resources Limited has appointed Bennetor (Ben) Magara as its new chief executive officer, effective 1 April 2025. He will succeed Riaan Koppeschaar, who will remain in his role as finance director. Magara expressed his honor in taking on the position and emphasized the importance of leveraging Exxaro’s strong foundation in coal to expand into low-carbon minerals, aligning with the company’s diversification strategy that he has influenced as a non-executive director.

With over 35 years of experience in the mining sector, Magara has a notable background in both hard and soft rock mining, beginning his career with Anglo American Coal. Most recently, he played a key role in stabilizing and restructuring Lonmin Plc, leading to its eventual acquisition by Sibanye Stillwater. Furthermore, he founded the Africa Mining & Metals Group, focusing on battery and precious metals, and has provided advisory services in the Democratic Republic of Congo mining sector.

Exxaro’s chairman, Geoffrey Qhena, highlighted Magara’s extensive experience in mining leadership and governance, stating that he would be instrumental in driving Exxaro’s growth and sustainability strategy. Additionally, the lead independent director, Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, praised his leadership capabilities and collaboration skills, noting that his appointment received unanimous approval from the Board.

Qhena expressed gratitude towards Koppeschaar for his contributions as acting CEO, acknowledging his professionalism and leadership during his tenure.
