To combat inflation, Brazil’s central bank has been implementing tighter monetary policies, with expectations for a third consecutive 100-basis-point increase next week, raising the benchmark interest rate to 14.25%. Despite the monthly decline, retail sales on a year-over-year basis rose by 3.1%, surpassing the forecasted 1.9% increase in a Reuters poll.
Andres Abadia, the chief Latin America economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, noted that the overall growth in retail sales was largely a result of mean-reversion. He emphasized ongoing economic weaknesses, indicating that the deterioration in consumer spending is likely to persist into the new year.
