Doyo Hassani Announces Presidential Run Against Samia Hassan for 2025

Doyo Hassani has announced his candidacy for the presidency of Tanzania in 2025, intending to challenge President Samia Suluhu Hassan and ACT-Wazalendo’s leader Dorothy Semu. His campaign emphasizes tackling unemployment, corruption, and promoting education. Support from his wife and campaign manager underscores the importance of these issues as he navigates the nomination process ahead.

Mr. Doyo Hassani has officially declared his candidacy for the presidency of Tanzania, positioning himself against the incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan and ACT-Wazalendo’s candidate, Ms. Dorothy Semu. As a member of the Nation League for Democracy (NLD), he shared his vision for the country during a press conference in Morogoro on March 14, 2025, outlining ten core priorities he plans to address ahead of the general elections scheduled for October 2025.

Among his primary objectives, Mr. Doyo seeks to combat unemployment, promote education, and revolutionize agriculture and livestock sectors. He also aims to enhance water resources, reduce tax evasion, tackle corruption, and foster a culture of responsible taxation within society. He remarked, “If I’m nominated as the presidential flag bearer for my party, I will focus on closing tax evasion loopholes, fighting corruption, and building a tax-paying culture at all levels of society.”

In addition to these major concerns, his agenda includes strengthening the mining sector, enhancing technological access, advocating for girls’ education, fortifying the union between Mainland Tanganyika and Zanzibar, and elevating the private sector to improve productivity across various domains.

Support for Mr. Doyo’s presidential ambitions came from his wife, Ms. Halima Rajabu, who described him as diligent and morally principled. She emphasized the urgency of addressing youth unemployment and pledged her confidence in Mr. Doyo’s dedication to improving the health sector. Furthermore, she highlighted the pressing need to tackle corruption within government entities, stating, “I will ensure that Mr. Doyo holds accountable those who abuse their positions, especially in major government projects.”

Ms. Rajabu also recognized the legacy of former Tanzanian leaders such as Julius Nyerere and Dr. John Magufuli for their commitment to fighting corruption and commended current President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her proactive leadership adjustments.

Mr. Doyo’s campaign manager, Mr. Twaha Saidi Mngatwa, announced that they expect to submit the necessary application to the party by March 21, 2025. The internal selection process to choose NLD’s presidential candidate will take place on April 10, 2025, pending endorsement from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In summary, Doyo Hassani’s declaration of his presidential candidacy highlights a competitive political landscape in Tanzania as he prepares to challenge the incumbent. With a strong focus on pressing national issues such as unemployment and corruption, his agenda resonates with many who seek reform. The upcoming nomination process will determine whether his vision will gain official support within his party, setting the stage for the forthcoming elections.
