Iran has expressed approval of the recent peace agreement proposed by Armenia and Azerbaijan, aimed at resolving a longstanding conflict that has persisted for nearly four decades. Esmaeil Baghaei, the spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, described the announcement as “a necessary and important step” towards achieving “lasting” peace in the South Caucasus. He conveyed optimism that both nations would resolve remaining issues through dialogue and finalize the agreement promptly.
On Thursday, Armenia and Azerbaijan announced their consensus regarding the text of the peace deal, with Armenia agreeing to relinquish its claims to the contested region of Karabakh. Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov reported that “the negotiation process on the text of the peace agreement with Armenia has been concluded,” indicating that Armenia had accepted Azerbaijan’s proposals on two previously unresolved articles.
Armenia’s Foreign Ministry corroborated this development, confirming the negotiation completion and stating that “the Peace Agreement is ready for signing.” Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan lauded the announcement as an “important event,” affirming Armenia’s readiness to discuss the logistics of signing the agreement. He expressed that the text represents a compromise necessary for a peace agreement.
Nevertheless, Pashinyan highlighted that two key issues remain unresolved, specifically the “non-deployment of third-party forces” along the border and the mutual withdrawal of legal cases both nations have lodged against each other in international courts. The region of Karabakh has historically been at the center of conflicts between the two countries, including wars in 2020 and during the 1990s. Internationally, it is recognized as part of Azerbaijan, which regained control over it following a swift offensive.
