On Friday, the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, announced the death of a senior Islamic State leader, Abdallah Makki Muslih al-Rufay’i, known as Abu Khadija. The Prime Minister characterized him as “one of the most dangerous terrorists in Iraq and the world.” His elimination was achieved by Iraqi security forces with the assistance of the US-led coalition battling Islamic State.
Islamic State, which once enforced strict Islamist governance over millions across Syria and Iraq, has been attempting to revive its influence in the Middle East, the West, and Asia. Previously, the organization was led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who in 2014 proclaimed a caliphate over substantial portions of Iraq and Syria. The US Central Command indicated in July that Islamic State has been working towards reconstitution after a prolonged decline in capability. Their assessment was supported by the group’s reported claim of 153 attacks in Iraq and Syria during the first half of 2024, indicating a potential doubling of their attack rate compared to the previous year.
