Malaysia will host the Regional Summer Academy from July 11-14 and the International Conference on Governance and Integrity on July 15, focusing on anti-corruption and governance best practices. Minister Azalina Othman Said emphasized the significance of these events during her recent visit to Vienna, highlighting discussions on legal cooperation and the adoption of international standards in insolvency.
On March 14, 2023, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Legal and Institutional Reforms), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, announced that Malaysia will host two significant international events in July. The first event, the Regional Summer Academy (RSA), will occur from July 11 to 14 and is a collaborative effort between the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA).
Following RSA, the International Conference on Governance and Integrity will take place on July 15, organized by the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department in partnership with MACC, IACA, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. These events are intended to serve as essential platforms to discuss effective governance practices and anti-corruption measures while reinforcing integrity and administrative oversight.
During a statement, Azalina highlighted that both events were discussed in light of her recent visit to Vienna, where she chaired a meeting of the (Extended) Bureau of the Thirteenth Session of the Assembly of Parties of IACA. She noted the importance of the Bureau in steering the IACA’s strategic direction and administrative matters.
Azalina emphasized the role of the Bureau, which includes representatives from 77 countries and four international organizations, in shaping policies and strategies that enhance IACA’s function as a premier anti-corruption training institution. Additionally, discussions also encompassed preparations for the upcoming 14th Session of the Assembly of Parties scheduled for later this year.
The meeting included notable attendees such as Malaysia’s Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to IACA, Ikram Mohammad Ibrahim, as well as senior officials from IACA, MACC, and the Legal Affairs Division. Azalina also held discussions with Anna Joubin-Bret, Secretary of UNCITRAL, regarding Malaysia’s intention to adopt the UNCITRAL Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency, showcasing the nation’s commitment to enhancing its insolvency framework according to global standards.
This effort supports Malaysia’s goal of legal innovation and sound economic governance, which Azalina presented during the Malaysia Cross-Border Insolvency Conference 2025 held on February 25. Under the ASEAN 2025 Chairmanship, the government aims to lead regional legal cooperation and synchronize ASEAN’s cross-border insolvency laws.
In summary, Malaysia is poised to host two pivotal international events in July aimed at addressing governance and integrity issues. The Regional Summer Academy and the International Conference on Governance and Integrity will provide key forums for discussing best practices in anti-corruption. Additionally, Malaysia’s engagement with international bodies like UNCITRAL illustrates the country’s commitment to aligning its legal framework with international standards, particularly in the area of insolvency.
