The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique has confirmed six deaths and injuries to 20 individuals, alongside the dislocation of 9,525 residents in the northern provinces of Nampula and Niasa, as well as in Zambezia province.
In Malawi, three additional deaths have been recorded, with approximately 20,000 individuals displaced due to severe flooding in the southern region associated with the cyclone. Chiphiliro Khamula, a representative from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), indicated that those affected are currently being accommodated in evacuation centers.
The cyclone initially made landfall in northern Mozambique early Sunday before advancing to southern Malawi, leading to significant flooding from Monday through Wednesday. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has highlighted that humanitarian relief efforts are facing challenges due to damaged roads and destroyed bridges, which hinder access to affected areas.
It is noteworthy that this recent cyclone follows Cyclone Chido, which struck the same regions in December of the previous year, resulting in 73 fatalities in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi.
