The gold, weighing 49 kilograms (108 pounds), was confiscated in 2021 from three individuals at Comoros’ main airport who were attempting to board a flight to Dubai, revealing a smuggling operation linking the two countries.
The investigation surrounding the incident resulted in the expedient repatriation of two suspects, both citizens of Madagascar, who subsequently faced trial in their home country. Additionally, five Comorian nationals, which included a former airport director and a customs officer, were arrested and sentenced to imprisonment in 2022 for their involvement in the smuggling operation.
Despite these legal actions, the Comoros initially withheld the confiscated gold, prompting Madagascar to suspend both air and sea connections to express their discontent. Following an agreement, a joint statement issued by both governments announced the return of the gold, signifying the resolution of their diplomatic issues.
The statement highlighted that “Legal proceedings and diplomatic exchanges initiated between the two countries have enabled the competent… authorities, to proceed today with the repatriation of these bars to Madagascar.” Furthermore, it emphasized the positive outcome as a demonstration of “good neighbourly relations and cooperation” between Comoros and Madagascar in their mutual commitment to combating illegal trafficking.
