Ghana Dominates at Independence Armwrestling Challenge

The Independence Armwrestling Challenge in Accra showcased the athletic prowess of top competitors from Ghana and neighboring countries. Ghana achieved remarkable success, winning multiple medals across various categories, including top honors for Grace Minta and Joshua Yeboah. On March 16, 2023, Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, expressed his excitement at the Independence Armwrestling Challenge held at Center Point Mall, Accra. The event featured impressive performances from top armwrestlers representing Ghana, Benin, Nigeria, and Togo, and was organized by the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) to celebrate Ghana’s independence and highlight the country’s achievement of winning 41 medals during the 2023 African Games.

Ghanaian athletes excelled in various categories, with Grace Minta winning gold in the female +80kg category by defeating competitors from Nigeria, Benin, and Togo. Her teammates, Florence Boakye and Afia Kumah, secured silver and bronze medals respectively, completing a podium sweep for Ghana in this category.

In the men’s competitions, Wisdom Abromekeyi, a medalist from the African Games, triumphed in the 65kg category, overcoming opponents including Daniel Acquah and Benin’s Amoono Stephen to clinch gold. Rising star Joshua Yeboah from Chicken Wing Club showcased his talent by dominating the 90kg category, defeating seasoned champions from the region to claim another gold for Ghana.

The event was graced by numerous dignitaries, including Dr. Kofi Addo Agyekum, Vice President of GAF; Joseph Cudjoe, former Minister for State Enterprises; and several members from the Ghana government and sports community. Each of them acknowledged the importance of this competition in promoting the sport and fostering regional camaraderie.

GAF President, Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, expressed his pride regarding the growth of armwrestling in Ghana and Africa, stating that the event demonstrated the dedication of the athletes, coaches, and organizers. He commended the successful organization of the event that brought together exceptional athletes from neighboring countries, reflecting positively on Ghana’s sporting achievements.
