Cabinet Secretaries Hassan Ali Joho and Aden Duale are advocating for unity among the Muslim community, urging support for the broad-based government and prompting individuals to obtain national Identity Cards. At the Third Annual Graduation ceremony at the Ibn Abbas Islamic Centre in Mombasa, CS Joho emphasized the necessity of robust participation by Muslims in national politics and leadership as part of collective engagement in government processes.
CS Joho highlighted the recent elimination of extra vetting procedures for national ID applications, viewing it positively and urging widespread registration among Muslims, including as voters. He stated, “When they count our votes in 2027, they will be perplexed,” stressing the potential for a significant Muslim presence in the upcoming General Election of 2032. He reinforced the importance of unity, referring to the Holy Qur’an’s call against divisions within the community.
Moreover, CS Joho criticized leaders opposing the repeal of additional vetting for IDs, labeling their actions as politically motivated. “We must be counted,” he stressed. Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry CS, Aden Duale, also reassured the Muslim community of their commitment to preventing harmful policies during their tenure and emphasized the importance of voting as a bloc to support President Ruto’s re-election campaign.
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir recognized that the push for Muslim unity is causing concern among some factions and announced initiatives to aid individuals without ID cards or birth certificates. He pledged, “We will advance this agenda not by words but by actions,” indicating tangible efforts to resolve these issues.
Garissa Town MP Mohamed Dekow vowed to mobilize North Eastern residents to register as voters for the 2027 elections. Furthermore, Bura MP Yakub Adow requested guidance from CS Joho and Duale for political direction within the community, remarking that no past administration in Kenya has advocated for Muslim rights as strongly as President William Ruto’s. Nominated MP Abdisirat Ali stated that opposition to the President largely arises from his dedication to equitable resource distribution and equality across the nation.
The ongoing calls for unity among the Muslim community signify a crucial effort by Cabinet Secretaries Joho and Duale to encourage participation in governance and electoral processes. Their initiatives, including the push for national ID registration, highlight the strategic importance of bloc voting in future elections. With community leaders joining the movement, the potential for a cohesive and influential Muslim presence in politics is clearly emphasized, setting the stage for significant engagement in the upcoming electoral cycles.
