Kalle Rovanpera seeks to improve his World Rally Championship standings at the Safari Rally Kenya after a challenging start to the season. He faces the new gravel tyres and aims to close the gap on the championship leader. With the support of his team and previous successes at this rally, he looks to deliver a necessary strong performance.
Kalle Rovanpera, a two-time world champion, aims to achieve a much-needed result at the upcoming Safari Rally Kenya as he seeks to revitalize his World Rally Championship (WRC) title campaign. The Toyota driver acknowledges that his season began with challenges, particularly in adjusting to the new Hankook control tyres introduced for 2025. Despite being a favorite for a third title, Rovanpera has yet to reach the podium, placing fourth in Monte Carlo and fifth in Sweden so far this season.
Rovanpera has expressed that adapting his driving style to align with the new tyre specifications has proven difficult. The Safari Rally in Kenya will mark his first opportunity to compete on gravel surfaces this season, employing Hankook’s gravel tyres. Currently placed third in the championship standings, Rovanpera is keen to reduce the 30-point gap between himself and his teammate and championship leader, Elfyn Evans.
“Now we go on gravel, a new tyre again, and something new to learn,” Rovanpera stated, reflecting on the shift in terrain. He underscored the importance of the Safari, where he has won two of the last four editions, and emphasized the need for a strong performance to remain competitive in the title race. He remains optimistic, stating that the team is capable of achieving significant results if they can synchronize their efforts effectively.
The driver provided favorable feedback on the gravel tyres following a recent pre-event test and highlighted the unique challenges that the Safari Rally presents. “It’s a hard rally to predict but we’ll try to push really hard and do our best,” he remarked. Toyota team principal Jari-Matti Latvala expressed confidence that the gravel tyres would suit Rovanpera’s driving better.
Due to scheduling conflicts, Latvala will not be in Kenya; instead, four-time world champion Juha Kankkunen will assume his responsibilities. Rovanpera appreciates Kankkunen’s wealth of experience and anticipates a positive collaboration during the rally.
Additionally, the 2025 World Rally Championship can be viewed on DAZN through its Rally TV channel, either as a stand-alone subscription or as an addition to existing DAZN memberships. DAZN broadcasts every race from the European Rally Championship as well, ensuring extensive coverage for rally enthusiasts.
Kalle Rovanpera approaches the Safari Rally Kenya with aspirations to rejuvenate his 2023 WRC season. Despite early challenges and adaptation to new tyre specifications, he plans to leverage the gravel terrain to boost his championship standings. Supported by experienced leadership and favorable tyre performance, Rovanpera is determined to achieve a successful rally, crucial for his title ambitions.
