Numerous delegates were denied entry on “technical reasons,” with some detained at the airport despite holding valid visas. Those affected hailed from countries such as Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique, and South Sudan, with over 25 political leaders denied access, including Edwin Sifuna from the Orange Democratic Movement.
A group of delegates, including notable figures like Khama and Majoro, experienced a nine-hour hold at the airport before being released after having missed their flight. Although the Angolan government offered transportation the next day, reports of vehicle breakdowns and redirected travelers highlighted further failures in accommodating the guests.
PAD issued a statement condemning the Angolan government’s actions and called for a public apology from President João Lourenço. The organization criticized the president’s security and immigration policies, suggesting a resistance to democratic dialogue and collaboration with fellow African leaders.
