The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay (Iglesia Evangélica Luterana del Paraguay – IELP) convened its 43rd General Assembly from March 8 to 9 in Loma Plata, Chaco Paraguayo. During this assembly, Rev. Alceu Alton Figur was reelected for another three-year term as president. The assembly’s theme, “Guided,” was inspired by Romans 8:14, emphasizing the church’s commitment to following divine guidance in their ministry.
President Figur expressed his gratitude upon reelection, stating, “Being reelected to another three-year term is a privilege and a great honour… My help comes from the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth.” He acknowledged the significant challenges faced by the church in contemporary society, including moral decay and the preservation of Christian values. However, he emphasized the church’s blessings, noting, “all our parishes are served by a pastor” and the continued success of their mission across the country.
Having been elected initially in 2022, President Figur also serves as the pastor of Cristo Rey Lutheran Church in Asunción. In addition to his leadership in the Paraguayan church, he represents Latin America on the International Lutheran Council’s (ILC) board of directors since 2022. Rev. Dr. Klaus Detlev Schulz, the ILC General Secretary, commended Figur’s service, stating, “May God continue to bless your service to the church in Paraguay,” underscoring the global commitment of Lutheran communities.
The General Assembly also overseen other elections within the church and celebrated the formal dedication of a new Lutheran mission church in Loma Plata, reinforcing the church’s mission efforts. President Figur actively contributes to this new mission congregation, traveling 500 kilometers biweekly to ensure ongoing support.
