Sheryl Hermonstine has been elected President of the Athletics Association of Guyana, securing five votes against Dr. Ariane Mangar. The election took place after an overdue Annual General Meeting. Other elected officials include Mark Scott, Mayfield Taylor-Trim, Dwayne Carter, and Niall Stanton, while James Cole continues as General Secretary. The election process highlighted ongoing governance issues in the association.

The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has elected Sheryl Hermonstine as its new President during an Annual General Meeting and election held at the National Racquet Centre in Georgetown. Hermonstine received five votes, while her challenger, Dr. Ariane Mangar, garnered one vote. Some clubs abstained from voting, and incumbent Aubrey Hutson was absent from the election proceedings.

In accordance with the AAG’s constitution, nominees not present must declare their intention to stand for election through a formal letter submitted to the Returning Officer. Previously, Hermonstine served as the First Vice President under Hutson and stepped in as acting President during Hutson’s suspension following the CARIFTA Games controversies.

Other officials elected include Mark Scott as First Vice President, Mayfield Taylor-Trim as Second Vice President, Dwayne Carter as Treasurer, and Niall Stanton as Assistant Treasurer. Additionally, the committee comprises Dr. Ariane Mangar, Thelson Williams, Tyrone Smith, Osafo Dos Santos, and Towanna McAlmont. The new executive has retained James Cole as General Secretary and appointed Kenisha Headley as Assistant General Secretary. The election was overseen by Attorney-at-Law Emily Dodson as the Returning Officer and followed multiple public disputes that exposed governance issues within the Track and Field community.

The election of Sheryl Hermonstine as the new President of the AAG marks a significant change in leadership after recent governance challenges. Hermonstine’s previous experience positions her well to steer the AAG forward, alongside a newly elected executive team. This transition reflects a response to prior issues within the association and aims to improve the management and future of athletics in Guyana.
