Somali Army and Local Forces Achieve Strategic Victories Against Al-Shabaab

The Somali National Army, with local and international support, has achieved significant victories against Al-Shabaab in central and southern Somalia. Operations have resulted in substantial losses for the militants, demonstrating the government’s commitment to restoring stability. Deployment agreements for the African Union troops are underway, further supporting these efforts.

The operations undertaken against Al-Shabaab in Somalia’s central and southern regions have shown promising results, with an increasing number of locals joining the Somali National Army (SNA) to reclaim strategic areas, thereby contributing to stability. Over the past two months, the SNA has continuously engaged in operations against Al-Shabaab, which has been considerably weakened, aided by US Africa Command and the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

In a significant operation at Sumadale in Middle Shabelle, approximately 30 Al-Shabaab fighters were killed by the combined efforts of the national army and local forces. These militants were reportedly planning a major attack against government troops. A state media report noted, “National and local forces dealt a major blow to Kharijite militants in Sumadale, Middle Shabelle, today, killing over 30 fighters,” confirmed by state media reporter Sadam Abdulle.

Additionally, the Somali National Army conducted a decisive operation in Awdheegle, also in Lower Shabelle, successfully repelling militants attempting to breach their positions. Significant losses were inflicted on Al-Shabaab during confrontations in both Awdheegle District and the Buursha Sheekh area of Middle Shabelle.

On another front, a planned raid executed by National Forces on Friday evening resulted in the dismantling of a militant gathering site in the Labada Garas area of Middle Shabelle, effectively eliminating all enemy fighters present. In Bakool, joint efforts between the SNA and local troops culminated in the deaths of over 40 Al-Shabaab fighters, demonstrating the government’s unwavering determination to defeat the group that has plagued the region for nearly two decades.

Moreover, the government has finalized agreements for the deployment of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia, with troops from Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Uganda cleared for operations in the region. However, Burundi is yet to finalize its troop numbers with the federal government.

The ongoing operations by the Somali National Army, supported by local forces and international allies, have significantly weakened Al-Shabaab’s capabilities in central and southern Somalia. The recent successes highlight the commitment to restoring stability in the region, showcasing effective military strategies and local cooperation. As troop agreements with the African Union are finalized, prospects for further advancements against the militant group appear promising.
