Elfyn Evans Aims High for the Upcoming Safari Rally Kenya

Elfyn Evans leads the WRC standings by 28 points but acknowledges the challenges of the Safari Rally due to unpredictable conditions. He expresses confidence in his team’s preparation, especially with new Hankook tyres for gravel. Although he has not won at this rally previously, he aims to challenge for victory this year.

Elfyn Evans, a driver for Toyota GAZOO Racing, leads the standings by 28 points after two successful rounds but acknowledges the unpredictability of Africa’s terrain and weather. “The Safari is a unique rally with a special set of conditions to face. It’s not easy even if it’s dry, but when you add the likelihood of rain and standing water, it can be a huge challenge just to get to the end,” stated Evans.

This year’s Safari Rally introduces WRC crews to gravel competition with Hankook’s new tyre. “The focus moves to gravel where the learning starts again with another new tyre,” he explained. Evans noted that although their recent tests were helpful in familiarizing themselves with this year’s car specifications, the conditions in Kenya will be distinct.

Despite the potential challenges presented by the Safari Rally, the Welsh driver approaches the event with optimism following a solid start to the season. “It’s been a good start to the year for us and we can be happy with how well the first two events have gone,” Evans reflected.

Evans has yet to achieve victory at the Safari, despite nearing success with podium finishes in 2021 and 2023. “This has been an amazing rally for the team over recent years. And while it’s not perhaps been my strongest event personally, we want to aim as high as possible and challenge for the win if it’s possible,” he concluded.

Elfyn Evans enters the Safari Rally Kenya with confidence and a strong lead in the standings. Aware of the unique challenges posed by the rally’s terrain and weather, he embraces the opportunity provided by new equipment. Despite not securing a win in past years, he remains determined to strive for success in this prestigious event, building on a strong start to the season and aiming for a podium finish.
