Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, is witnessing intensified clashes as government forces from the south join the army’s efforts to regain control from the paramilitary RSF, which currently holds the presidential palace. The ongoing conflict has resulted in civilian deaths, widespread displacement, and has contributed to one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
Intense clashes continue to escalate in Khartoum, Sudan, as government forces from the south arrive to bolster troops already present near the presidential palace, which is under paramilitary control. The Army seeks to reclaim various strategic territories, including the capital, following ongoing hostilities with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that commenced in April 2023.
On Monday, military spokesman General Nabil Abdullah reported that Armoured Corps units from the south have integrated with the General Command forces in Khartoum. These units successfully secured a hospital previously controlled by RSF troops, highlighting the ongoing conflict’s severity.
In a recent video address, RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, also known as Hemedti, proclaimed that his forces “will not leave the Republican Palace” and threatened to extend the conflict to additional regions in Sudan. He expressed confidence in his troops’ capacity to achieve victory amid escalating confrontations.
During the weekend, RSF’s artillery bombardment resulted in the deaths of six civilians, including two children, in Omdurman. Furthermore, a Sunday attack left 36 civilians injured, a situation exacerbated by falling shells in residential neighborhoods and public areas, underscoring the humanitarian crisis faced by the civilian population.
The civil war has led to significant urban displacement, with approximately 3.5 million individuals in Khartoum forced to abandon their homes, and it has created one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises according to the African Union. The fighting has also severely impacted the broader region, displacing over 12 million Sudanese citizens.
Additionally, the RSF maintains control over substantial areas, particularly in Darfur and parts of the south, while the army commands the northern and eastern territories. Recent military advancements suggest the army may reclaim control of the capital soon, having successfully breached an RSF blockade earlier, which had persisted for nearly two years.
As conflicts persist across regions, including Blue Nile state, where RSF recently claimed military victories, the situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate, necessitating urgent international attention and response.
