O&L Group Transitions Pick n Pay Namibia to Model Brand, Effective July 1

The Ohlthaver & List Group will rebrand Pick n Pay Namibia to Model, effective July 1. This change follows the termination of a 27-year franchise agreement due to financial losses. The rebranding aims to create a sustainable shopping experience tailored to Namibian consumers, focusing on quality and local authenticity.

The Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group will officially rebrand Pick n Pay Namibia as Model effective July 1. This decision follows the termination of the franchise agreement with Pick n Pay South Africa after 27 years of operation. O&L previously used the name ‘Model Supermarket’ prior to this franchise venture, and now aims to enhance the shopping experience under the Model brand.

During the launch announcement, O&L executive chairman Sven Thieme emphasized the significance of this rebranding, stating it marks a return to their original operating name infused with a fresh shopping approach. The company traces its retail heritage back to 1965 with Model, and Thieme conveyed their commitment to redefining the shopping experience for Namibians.

Model is set to officially launch nationwide on July 1, with an outlined phased refurbishment plan to gradually unveil the full Model experience. Graeme Mouton, managing director of Model, shared that the brand will prioritize a shopping experience that aligns closely with Namibian consumer needs, delivering quality products and an inspiring retail environment.

Mouton further elaborated that Model represents more than a retail outlet; it signifies a movement embodying authenticity and commitment to the Namibian essence. The O&L Group, through its holdings, currently operates 19 Pick n Pay branded outlets in Namibia under the former franchise.

Thieme had previously indicated that financial sustainability concerns prompted the decision to halt the franchise agreement, as the business endured losses. He reassured that the transition would lead to a viable business model that secures employee futures. CNBC Africa reported on the broader struggles faced by Pick n Pay in South Africa, including substantial financial impairments and operational challenges due to rising costs and load shedding impacts.

The Ohlthaver & List Group is transitioning from Pick n Pay Namibia to the Model brand, effective July 1. This rebranding is part of a strategic move to create a sustainable grocery retail experience tailored to Namibian consumers. With a focus on authenticity and passion, the company aims to redefine shopping in Namibia while securing the future of its employees after years of financial losses under the previous franchise arrangement.
