A recent paramilitary attack in Omdurman has left at least seven civilians dead, including two children, with 43 others injured. The shelling, conducted by the RSF during a public prayer, has drawn scrutiny amid ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has claimed nearly 30,000 lives since April 2023 and displaced millions.
On March 18, the Sudanese government reported that at least seven civilians were killed, among them two children, due to artillery shelling from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Omdurman, a city located north of Khartoum. The state media highlighted that the assault resulted in 43 additional injuries, with 18 children aged four to twelve among the wounded. These individuals have been received at nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.
The artillery attack occurred in the Karari locality during a volunteer prayer, a time when numerous children were present, participating in games. A paramedic at Al-Nao Hospital disclosed that many patients suffered from limb injuries caused by flying projectiles, with some having undergone amputations. Additionally, some victims faced severe head injuries requiring medical interventions unavailable at the facility.
No immediate response has been provided by the RSF regarding the incident. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) has consistently accused the RSF of targeting the Karari area, the last densely populated locality in Omdurman, which also hosts several military installations, including the Wadi Seidna military base with its airport.
Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in significant conflict between the SAF and RSF, claiming over 29,683 lives according to a monitoring group referenced by the United Nations. Additionally, the ongoing violence has displaced more than 15 million individuals, according to estimates from the International Organization for Migration.
The tragic artillery shelling by the RSF in Omdurman has resulted in a substantial loss of civilian life and numerous injuries. This incident reflects the ongoing violence in Sudan’s conflict, which continues to impact the lives of countless individuals, displacing millions and causing significant humanitarian crises. The lack of accountability from the RSF exacerbates the situation, raising further concerns about the safety of civilians amid the turbulent unrest.
