Following the escalation of conflict on March 17, Lebanese President Michel Aoun ordered military action in response to gunfire from the Syrian side of the border. The Lebanese Ministry of Health confirmed that the clashes resulted in the deaths of seven Lebanese citizens and injured 52 others, including a four-year-old girl.
The hostilities began after the temporary Syrian government accused the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah of crossing the border, leading to the kidnapping and killing of three soldiers on Lebanese territory. Hezbollah has denied these accusations; however, alternative reports suggest that local clans involved in cross-border smuggling may have been responsible for the violence.
