In a recent operation, Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces Command reported the successful destruction of three North Korean howitzers located in the Kursk region. These artillery systems, provided to the Russian army as military aid from North Korea, had been camouflaged in a forest for concealment and were equipped with protective ‘grills’ to shield against FPV drones.
Ukrainian drone operators detected these self-propelled howitzers and subsequently directed fire from Ukrainian rocket artillery, utilizing high-explosive and cluster warheads in their assault. This operation marks the second successful elimination of the North Korean Koksan artillery systems in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian conflict, following earlier destruction by the 412th NEMESIS Regiment in Luhansk a month prior.
The M1978 Koksan self-propelled howitzer stands as a formidable artillery piece, known to be the longest-ranged in North Korea’s arsenal, equipped with a 170-mm gun capable of firing up to 60 kilometers. Originally designed to target Seoul from the northern side of the demilitarized zone, these systems are now being repurposed by the Russian Armed Forces to support their military operations in Ukraine amidst significant artillery losses.
As reported by Ukrinform, as of March 18, a total of 76 combat encounters have occurred between Ukrainian defenders and Russian forces, especially concentrated within six key sectors, with the heaviest engagements noted in the Kursk region.
