Reports from independent experts highlighted extensive abuses in these nations, particularly focusing on repressive actions against citizens protesting for fundamental rights.
In Iran, the situation escalated following the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022, leading to widespread protests. Sara Hossein, chair of the Fact-Finding Mission on Iran, reported incidents of children being severely injured by metal pellet ammunition and subsequently facing torture in detention facilities. Despite the urgency of justice and equality, Iran persistently neglects these demands, continuing its oppressive tactics against protestors and their families.
Furthermore, Shaheen Ali of the Fact-Finding Mission emphasized the lack of trust victims exhibit towards the Iranian judicial system, asserting the need for accountability measures outside of Iran to ensure justice for victims and survivors. The Iranian delegation objected to these findings.
The Syrian crisis also received significant attention, with Paulo Pinheiro of the Commission of Inquiry on Syria stressing the need to uncover the truth regarding thousands who have disappeared under the Assad regime. He noted the willingness of the new caretaker authorities to cooperate but cautioned that the humanitarian situation in Syria remains dire.
Mr. Pinheiro highlighted the family’s desperation for truth and justice about their missing relatives, advocating for a coordinated effort between the authorities and humanitarian organizations to address this issue comprehensively.
Regarding Venezuela, Marta Valiñas, chair of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission, reported severe ongoing human rights violations, including political repression and arbitrary detentions. Issues of electoral integrity were raised, such as the National Electoral Council’s failure to disclose complete electoral data, raising questions about transparency in the political process.
As the 2025 presidential inauguration approaches, instances of arbitrary detentions of opposition members have surged, coupled with violent crackdowns on protests. Valiñas also pointed out troubling cases of detainee deaths due to alleged torture and neglect in state custody, which the Venezuelan Government has vehemently denied, describing the findings as politically motivated and false.
