The session, attended by representatives from 47 member states, emphasized the need to address these severe issues. Notably, the reports presented included the troubling situation following the widespread protests in Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022, where children faced violent repression and torture, according to experts’ findings.
Sara Hossein, chair of the Fact-Finding Mission on Iran, pointed out that during protests, children were severely injured or killed due to the use of metal pellets by authorities. Furthermore, the treatment of individuals detained during these protests involved extreme violence, including allegations of torture and rape. Hossein underscored that Iran has not adequately acknowledged the calls for justice from victims and their families, especially women and girls, amidst ongoing state-led repression of fundamental freedoms.
Additionally, she noted that there is a lack of trust in Iran’s judicial system among victims and survivors, which hinders the prospects for accountability. Given these circumstances, she emphasized the importance of pursuing accountability measures externally. In response, the Iranian delegation rejected the findings of the monitoring body’s reports.
In relation to Syria, Paulo Pinheiro, head of the Commission of Inquiry, called for greater efforts to clarify the fates of numerous individuals who have disappeared due to actions by the Assad regime. He acknowledged some cooperation from the new caretaker authorities but warned that Syria’s humanitarian conditions remain dire. Pinheiro highlighted the urgent need to address the humanitarian situation, advocating for an end to sanctions and barriers hindering recovery efforts.
Moreover, he conveyed the desperation of families seeking truth and justice regarding their missing loved ones, emphasizing the necessity of comprehensive efforts involving civil society for clarity on these unresolved cases.
Marta Valiñas, the chair of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela, addressed the profound human rights infringements in the country, including political repression and arbitrary detentions. Concerns were raised about the transparency of the 2024 presidential election, which was reportedly marred by political interference and violence against dissenters.
Before the inauguration of the newly elected president, there was a noticeable increase in the arbitrary detention of opposition figures. Valiñas documented the fatalities associated with protests against electoral fraud, confirming that state forces utilized lethal firearms against demonstrators. Moreover, disturbing reports emerged regarding detainee deaths attributed to inadequate medical care and inhumane treatment.
In light of these findings, the Venezuelan Government refuted the allegations, asserting that the investigation’s outcomes were politically driven and lacked scientific credibility.
