Dr. Sandra Jowers-Barber has been chosen to participate in a competitive CAORC-WARC seminar in Dakar, Senegal, from January 3-21, 2024. The seminar focuses on West Africa’s history and connections with the diaspora, with visits to key locations. Participants must implement a project aimed at increasing internationalization on their campuses following the seminar.
Dr. Sandra Jowers-Barber, Ph.D., currently serving as the director of the Division of Humanities and Criminology at UDC’s Community College, has been selected to participate in a prestigious two-week research seminar in Dakar, Senegal, scheduled from January 3 to January 21, 2024.
The seminar, organized by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) and the West African Research Center (WARC), represents a highly competitive opportunity. Participants will visit significant locations such as Goree Island, Toubacouta, and Saint-Louis, enriching their understanding of the area.
CAORC provides fully funded seminars aimed at faculty and administrators from U.S. community colleges and minority-serving institutions, with the goal of enhancing global perspectives and fostering essential skills such as critical thinking, communication, and leadership among students. Each seminar accommodates 12 to 15 participants.
Titled “West Africa and the Diaspora: Continuities and Transformations,” the seminar will include lectures, site visits, panel discussions, and film screenings that explore the history, culture, arts, economy, and politics of Senegal, particularly emphasizing West Africa’s connections with the diaspora.
Furthermore, the seminar will focus on Senegal’s religious diversity and tolerance, as well as the transnational movements impacting society and the youth in the region.
Participants are mandated to develop and implement a project aimed at fostering internationalization on their campuses within one year of the seminar’s conclusion. A project report, along with curriculum documentation, must be submitted for inclusion on CAORC’s Open Educational Resources site. Additionally, contributors are required to provide a short article for the CAORC blog, Field Notes, within three months post-seminar.
Dr. Sandra Jowers-Barber’s selection for the CAORC-WARC 2024 Faculty Development Seminar signifies an important academic opportunity which will enhance her ability to provide a global perspective within her institution. Through the seminar’s comprehensive curriculum and subsequent projects, participants will further engage with international education and cultural understanding, ultimately benefiting both faculty and students.
