In Sudan, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have reportedly killed at least 50 individuals in Khartoum in the past week as violent confrontations with the army intensify. The Khartoum Emergency Response Room has expressed concerns regarding grave human rights violations occurring in various districts, including reports of abductions and surging forced displacements in central and southern areas of the capital.
The organization noted that approximately 70 individuals, including 12 volunteers, were reported abducted last week. Additionally, instances of sexual violence have emerged, though precise data is challenging to ascertain due to societal fears and stigma surrounding such incidents. The response room further reported alarming levels of malnutrition, declaring that seven children have succumbed to malnutrition-related issues since early March.
UNICEF has projected that around 3.2 million children in Sudan are anticipated to experience malnutrition this year. Moreover, famine has been officially declared in three displacement camps in the Darfur region and portions of the Nuba mountains, based on assessments supported by the United Nations.
The ongoing conflict, which began in April 2023, has intensified, with the army focused on reclaiming territory within Khartoum. In a recent video address, RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo reaffirmed his troops’ intent to retain control over the Republican Palace as clashes continue.
The military reported that its forces have made significant advancements towards Khartoum from the south, exerting increased pressure on rival paramilitary factions and edging closer to regaining control over the capital. This conflict has caused significant civilian casualties, displacing over 12 million individuals and leading to one of the most severe hunger crises globally, with at least 3.5 million people in Khartoum alone having fled their homes amid the violence and 100,000 facing dire famine conditions as stated by the United Nations.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan, marked by attacks from the RSF in Khartoum, has resulted in significant loss of life, widespread human rights violations, and rising malnutrition rates among vulnerable populations, particularly children.
