On Wednesday, the National Association of Municipalities of Mozambique announced plans to create a national development company to support local municipalities. President João Ferreira emphasized their readiness to aid in national development, even amidst ongoing social unrest due to disputed election results and rising living costs.
The National Association of Municipalities of Mozambique (ANAMM) has pledged to actively contribute to the nation’s development. They announced plans to establish a national development company tasked with acquiring shared equipment for municipalities across the country. ANAMM President João Ferreira expressed their commitment to enhancing service delivery and supporting not only municipal growth but national progress as a whole.
During a meeting with President Daniel Chapo in Maputo, Ferreira emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to meet the challenges faced by urban districts. He noted that the equipment the new company will procure is intended to address pressing municipal issues effectively.
Amidst this initiative, Mozambique has faced escalating social unrest since last October, linked to contested election results and rising living costs. Protests have erupted, initiated by former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, against the ruling Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo).
These protests have led to a tragic loss of life, with electoral observers reporting at least 327 deaths, including many children. Reports indicate that approximately 750 individuals have sustained gunshot wounds during these demonstrations. The government has officially confirmed at least 80 fatalities and noted significant destruction, including 1,677 businesses and 200 educational and health facilities.
The National Association of Municipalities of Mozambique is taking proactive steps to support national development through the establishment of a national development company. This initiative comes in a context of social unrest and protests arising from contested electoral results and rising living costs, highlighting the urgent need for collaborative solutions to address the challenges faced by municipalities in the country.
