President Dina Boluarte declared her government’s commitment to rectifying historical neglect in poor regions of Peru, particularly through healthcare initiatives. A significant step was the signing of a $27 million contract with the UK for the modernization of Guillermo Diaz de la Vega Hospital, which will greatly enhance regional healthcare. The administration also considers implementing the death penalty due to public support expressed in regional hearings.
Dina Boluarte, the President of Peru, announced that her government is diligently working to amend the historical neglect experienced in Apurimac and other impoverished regions such as Puno and Huancavelica. She remarked on a recent initiative, including signing an addendum to a contract with the United Kingdom, aimed at modernizing Guillermo Diaz de la Vega Hospital in Apurimac.
During her address, President Boluarte criticized certain authorities for using social justice as a political instrument, emphasizing her administration’s genuine commitment to addressing these concerns. She stated, “We committed to reactivating the construction of hospitals whose execution had been halted by that scourge that harms Peru so much: corruption. Our commitment to health is unwavering because health is a right for all Peruvians, not just a privileged few.”
The President underscored that the addendum for modernizing the hospital is a significant advancement towards improving healthcare systems in the region. She highlighted that the success of this initiative stems from the collaboration between the Executive Branch and regional government, stating that collective efforts can lead to substantial progress and completion of projects. Her sentiment stressed the need for unity, stating, “We cannot live in uncertainty or take advantage of certain situations to, as they say, ‘stir up the hornet’s nest.'”
With an investment exceeding $27 million, the hospital will upgrade from Level II-2 to Level III-1, transforming it into a high-complexity center. The facility is set to feature 105 consultation rooms, 12 operating rooms, 293 beds, and various specialized services, demonstrating a commitment to timely and comprehensive healthcare for the local population. President Boluarte emphasized this upgrade will “benefit more than three million people in Apurímac with a modern, specialized, high-complexity hospital.”
She further referenced additional healthcare projects planned during her administration, expressing assurance in fulfilling deadlines and avoiding corruption. The President also highlighted the unlocking of the Antonio Lorena Hospital project and the accountability of former governors linked to previous corruption cases.
In a related note, President Boluarte revealed extensive public support for the death penalty during consultations held by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, indicating a possible government consideration for its implementation. She reiterated, “Just as they take the lives of defenseless people with ease, we are considering taking their lives as well through the death penalty.”
The signing ceremony, which included UK Ambassador Gavin Cook and other officials, marks a critical step in enhancing Peru’s healthcare infrastructure while adhering to transparency and international standards.
