The United Arab Emirates, represented by Her Excellency Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs, participated in the Ninth Brussels Conference focused on supporting Syria during her visit on March 17 and 18, 2025. This conference, titled “Standing with Syria: Meeting the Needs for a Successful Transition,” convened various stakeholders including EU institutions and Syrian civil society to foster global support for a peaceful transition in Syria.
During the conference, discussions centered on the voluntary return of refugees and how this process could alleviate community pressures while considering the limited resources within Syria. Participants collectively pledged to maintain support for Syrians, both within Syria and in neighboring nations, ensuring that their needs are met effectively.
In addressing attendees, HE Nusseibeh highlighted the critical role of an inclusive transition for Syria’s future. She emphasized the vital contributions women can make in peace negotiations, insisting, “There is a strong link between the active engagement of women in negotiating peace agreements, and the long-term durability of those post-conflict settlements.”
Her Excellency also called for enhanced efforts to promote tolerance and combat extremism, urging collaborative actions to prevent the re-establishment of terrorist strongholds in Syria. She condemned recent attacks on Syrian security personnel and expressed the necessity for accountability for such violence.
Nusseibeh reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to aiding the Syrian populace, which has surpassed EUR 1.5 billion since the onset of the conflict, including EUR 250 million in aid over the past two years. Additionally, she underscored the UAE’s firm stance on the stability and territorial integrity of Syria, and urged Israel to adhere to international law and the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement.
Beyond her participation in the conference, HE Nusseibeh engaged in discussions with EU officials, European Parliament members, and diplomats from Europe and the Middle East to further solidify supportive relationships for Syria’s future.
The UAE’s active involvement in the Brussels Conference exemplifies its commitment to supporting Syria through a multifaceted approach that prioritizes humanitarian assistance and sustainable peace.
