On March 17 and 18, 2025, Her Excellency Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs and Envoy of the Foreign Minister to the European Union, represented the United Arab Emirates at the Ninth Brussels Conference titled ‘Standing with Syria: Meeting the Needs for a Successful Transition’. This significant event convened EU institutions, key partner nations, the United Nations, and Syrian civil society to mobilize international support for a peaceful transition in Syria.
The conference aimed to foster global assistance for the Syrian populace, both domestically and in the surrounding region. Discussions included strategies to facilitate the voluntary and large-scale return of refugees, addressing the need for host communities to manage this return without overwhelming existing support infrastructures in Syria.
In her address, HE Nusseibeh praised the collaborative efforts of participating nations and organizations in striving for a brighter future for Syria and the broader region. She emphasized the necessity of an entirely inclusive transition process, spotlighting the crucial role women play in achieving sustainable peace. Nusseibeh stated, “There is a strong link between the active engagement of women in negotiating peace agreements, and the long-term durability of those post-conflict settlements.”
Further, Nusseibeh highlighted the urgent need for promoting tolerance and countering extremism and terrorism, while calling for concerted efforts to prevent the resurgence of terrorist organizations in Syria. She condemned attacks on Syrian security forces and violence against civilians, demanding full accountability for those responsible.
The UAE’s steadfast support for the Syrian people was underscored, reflecting over EUR 1.5bn in aid since the conflict began, with EUR 250m disbursed in the last two years alone. Nusseibeh reiterated the UAE’s commitment to Syria’s stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, urging Israel to comply with international law and the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement.
Additionally, during her visit, HE Nusseibeh engaged in discussions with EU officials, Members of the European Parliament, and senior diplomats from Europe and the Middle East, reinforcing the UAE’s diplomatic efforts.
